Section for Small or Rural Hospitals
The American Hospital Association and its Section for Small or Rural Hospitals add value to small or rural hospital members through:
- Representation and advocacy
- Communication, education, and management strategies
- State association and inter-organization collaboration
- A rural hospital leadership awards program
The Section and AHA ensure that the unique needs of this segment of its membership are a national priority. Working side by side with state and regional associations and with counsel from its governing council, the Section monitors the issues and concerns facing its constituents, develops policy, and identifies solutions to their most pressing problems.

Membership
|
The AHA’s Section for Small or Rural Hospitals (section) has over 1600 small or rural hospital members. To become a section member, the hospital must meet at least one of the following criteria: have 100 or fewer beds, 4000 or fewer admissions, or be located outside a Metropolitan Statistical Area. No additional dues are paid beyond institutional hospital membership |

Governance |
Small or Rural Section hospital leaders serve a variety of governance roles within the Association. The section's governance and policymaking bodies are the governing council and regional policy board (RPBs). The Section governing council actively advises the AHA on advocacy positions, public policy issues, and member service strategies.

Executive Leadership, Education & Resources |
Valuable opportunities are provided for Small or Rural Section leaders to interact and network with one another through a variety of Webinars and teleconferences, and a Section-sponsored leadership award recognizes hospital executives and provides professional development and educational opportunities. A wide range of Association resources are also developed to accelerate performance improvement and to support health reform activities practices. |
