Medicare Recovery Audit Contractors \(RACs\): Coding & Documentation Strategies

The Medicare Recovery Audit Contractor \(RAC\) program is authorized by Congress to identify improper Medicare payments - both overpayments and underpayments. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services \(CMS\) recently reported that RACs collected 92.7 million in overpayments during the three-year RAC demonstration, with more than 96 percent of these funds collected from hospitals in a limited number of states.
