AHA Advocacy Alliance for Graduate Medical Education
A number of policy makers are advocating for a significant reduction in Medicare graduate medical education funding. Last September, the president's plan for Economic Growth and Deficit Reduction called for reducing the indirect medical education (IME) adjustment by 10 percent, which would cut Medicare medical education payments by approximately $9 billion over 10 years. Others - such as the Simpson-Bowles deficit commission - have recommended reducing the IME adjustment by 60 percent and making other changes that would cut Medicare medical education payments by an estimated $60 billion through 2020. Congress has not reduced Medicare GME payments. Yet given the current political environment, we believe teaching hospitals may be at risk for significant reductions both in the Lame Duck session later this year and in budget deliberations next year.
