2010 AHA Advocacy Issue Papers
The AHA’s advocacy efforts in 2010 will focus not only on providing advice on health care reform legislation implementation but also supporting hospitals on several fronts:
SHAPING THE FUTURE FOR A HEALTHIER AMERICA-Hospitals can anticipate a future in which care is more integrated, providers are more at risk financially, and all elements of the system are more publicly accountable. The AHA will ensure that as changes are rolled out, they are done so responsibly, with an eye toward improving care for patients and communities, making the case for medical liability reform, and removing barriers to clinical integration.
ADVANCING EXCELLENCE IN PATIENT CARE-The job of improving quality and patient safety is a continuous journey. The AHA will continue its numerous efforts to help hospitals improve quality and patient safety, through Hospitals in Pursuit of Excellence, the development of action guides, and leadership in the Hospital Quality Alliance. Efforts will also be focused on changes to Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services electronic health records incentive programs, and addressing critical health workforce challenges.
PROTECTING THE PROMISE OF CARE-Critical to hospitals' abilities to provide the quality health care and services that communities rely on is accessing needed resources. The last several years of the economic crisis did not spare hospitals, as health care providers were forced to do more with less. Chief activities will include advocating for fair Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement, ensuring that hospitals have access to capital and securing pension funding relief.
The issues listed here and in the following “Issue Papers” provide a road map for the AHA, its state, regional and metropolitan hospital association partners, and most importantly AHA members, as we tackle key issues and work together on health care reform implementation.
