Health For Life Community Forum: Harrisburg, PA

Health for Life Community Forum in Harrisburg, PA

Health care, business, government and consumer representatives gathered on August 27, 2008 in Harrisburg, PA, for the third AHA-cosponsored discussion of comprehensive health care reform.  Co-hosted by the Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) and Pennsylvania Cable Network, the event focused on ways to make health care more accessible and less expensive.  HAP President and CEO Carolyn Scanlan called reform “complex” and “multidimensional,” saying all stakeholders share a social mission and will need to make sacrifices.  “We don’t want anyone to be left with the impression that we view only hospitals as the place you get care,” said Scanlan, an AHA trustee.  “The underlying issue is how we put all the pieces of the system together.”  The forum was broadcast live to some 3.3 million cable subscribers across the state.

Forum panelists:

  • Garry Scheib, chief operating officer of the University of Pennsylvania Health System and AHA Board of Trustees
  • Glenn Steele Jr., M.D., president and CEO of Geisinger Health System and AHA Board of Trustees
  • Larry Clark, legislative director for Gov. Edward Rendell’s Office of Health Care Reform
  • Gene Barr of the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry
  • Ray Landis of AARP Pennsylvania
  • Peter Lund of the Pennsylvania Medical Society
  • Kati Sipp of SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania
  • Kevin Shivers of the National Federation of Independent Businesses-Pennsylvania
