Crete (NE) Area Medical Center
Carol Friesen, president and CEO of Crete (NE) Area Medical Center, knows it's important for her organization to engage the candidates running for office in November to replace Sen. Ben Nelson, D-NE, who is retiring.
"We have spent a lot of time with the two candidates from our state that could potentially fill that vacancy," says Friesen, noting that Nelson's vote has often been critical on important health care issues.
In addition, the critical access hospital has hosted members of Congress and state legislators, because Friesen says it "is important that we make sure they know what the real issues are and try to inform them."
Meanwhile, Friesen says that Crete Area Medical Center, which
is part of Bryan LGH Health System, has utilized resources
from the AHA's "We Care, We Vote" initiative to "educate and engage" employees, board members and the hospital community about the importance of voting in this year's election.
The AHA launched We Care, We Vote this summer as a nationwide effort to get hospital executives, medical staff, employees and board members to express their concerns about cutting hospitals' Medicare and Medicaid payments, and to ask questions about where congressional candidates stand on these and other health care issues. The initiative includes materials for hospital leaders to help make their employees, trustees, medical staff, volunteers and others more aware of the challenges facing the hospital and health system field and what's at stake in the coming federal budget debate. There also is a toolkit hospital leaders can use to help their employees register to vote.
