Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton, Trenton, NJ

When Sen. Robert Menendez, D-NJ, visited Trenton's Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton, hospital leaders took him on a tour of the new pediatric emergency department and explained a new initiative aimed at reducing hospital readmission rates among patients with chronic conditions.

“We thought it was important for him to see our community hospital in action,” says hospital president and CEO Skip Cimino.

In addition, Menendez held a town hall with hospital employees, trustees and physicians. Cimino says legislators need to understand that additional cuts to Medicare and Medicaid funding for hospital services would mean fewer doctors, nurses and other caregivers and longer wait times for care.

In addition, Cimino says the hospital is considering a voter registration drive and would encourage all of the employees to exercise their right to vote.

“This election is one of extraordinary importance for our nation,” Cimino says. “We need to have leadership that is going to address the problems that exist in this nation.”

The AHA's “We Care, We Vote” initiative includes a toolkit designed to help you help your employees register to vote. You'll find links to several websites that can provide information on your state's process for registering to vote - a who exactly is eligible, how to register and what deadlines must be met in order to be eligible to vote in November. You'll also find customizable messages you can customize to launch your drive and help spread the word, sample artwork for posters, table cards, paycheck stuffers, etc. that you can print to raise awareness of the voter registration drive throughout your organization.
