How to Effectively Integrate Psychiatric Services into Primary Medical Care

The link between mental and substance-use problems and illnesses and general health and health care is very strong. This is especially true with respect to chronic illnesses, which now are the leading cause of illness, disability, and death in the United States.  Improving our nation's general health and our general health care system depends upon equally attending to the problems in health care for mental and substance-use conditions.

Please join your AHA colleagues for a call highlighting the Mayo Clinic's successful initiatives in integrating behavioral health and physical health.  Ample time will be allotted for questions and answers.   

David Katzelnick M.D., Chair Integrated Behavioral Health, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN will share how Mayo has integrated behavioral medicine into primary care specialties; and linked these integrated care services with existing community based and social services.  He will describe Mayo's implementation of an integrated program for patients with depression that has resulted in improved outcomes, and increased reimbursement from employers and insurers.  Dr. Katzelnick will also share lessons learned as Mayo works to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations, and maintain a continuity of care.
