Decreasing Lengths of Stay for Psychiatric Patients in the Emergency Department
St. Josephs Behavioral Health Center, Stockton, CA
Thursday, May 5th 3:00-4:00 pm ET
(2:00 pm CT, 1:00 pm MT, Noon PT)
Across the country many hospitals are seeing an increase in demand for psychiatric services via the emergency department. At the same time, many state budget cuts have reduced the number of community based psychiatric services and psychiatric inpatient beds. These trends have increased the treatment and placement challenges faced by emergency room staff.
Please join your AHA colleagues for a call featuring Paul Rains RN, MSN, President, St. Joseph's Behavioral Health Center, Stockton, California who will share how they established a local collaborative to reduce the length of stay of psychiatric patients in the emergency department. He will describe how the work of the collaborative has allowed them to expedite placement of patients and address concerns around transfers of psychiatric patients. As a part of his presentation Mr. Rains will review the uniform medical clearance form created during this initiative and how it is effectively used to resolve potential conflicts.
