The Senate and House are scheduled to begin work on their respective versions of a fiscal year 2007 federal budget the week of March 6 & just two weeks away! The marker that has been set is the White House budget, which proposes nearly $36 billion in cuts to Medicare and more than $13 billion to Medicaid. Learn More

President Bush today proposed almost $36 billion in cuts to Medicare over five years in his fiscal year (FY) 2007 federal budget. Based on the information provided by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, these cuts to Medicare include: A reduction in the market basket update for inpatient and outpatient care of 0.45% in FY2007; of 0.4% in FY2008, and of 0.4% in FY2009. When Congress returns later this month, they'll once again focus on the 2006 budget reconciliation bill. House and Senate conferees met last month and agreed on a budget package. The House passed the package and sent it to the Senate, but during Senate debate on the legislation, several non-deficit-reducing provisions were taken out, thereby changing the underlying bill.
