Glenn D. Steele Jr., M.D., Ph.D., Receives Justin Ford Kimball Innovators Award
WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 7, 2015) – The American Hospital Association (AHA) today announced that the Justin Ford Kimball Innovators Award will be awarded to Glenn D. Steele, Jr., M.D., Ph.D., president and chief executive officer, Geisinger Health System, Danville, Pa. The award recognizes people or organizations that have developed or introduced an influential, innovative approach to health care financing and/or health care delivery to improve access or coordination of care. Dr. Steele will receive the award at a ceremony at the AHA Annual Membership Meeting on Monday, May 4 in Washington, D.C.
Beginning his tenure as Geisinger’s chief executive officer in 2001, Steele is known for his inventive approach to leading the system. His emphasis on value-based care and quality reverberates through the physician-led, rural system that serves more than 3 million residents in 48 Pennsylvania counties.
“Glenn changed the way health care is delivered,” said AHA President and CEO Rich Umbdenstock. “A physician leader and innovator, he has developed and championed models of quality improvement, evidence-based medicine, integration, health information technology and population health and set the standard for health care systems and hospitals nationwide.”
As a clinician, Steele studied treatment of liver cancer, colorectal cancer surgery, the cell biology of gastrointestinal cancer and pre-cancer. He authored or co-authored nearly 500 scientific and professional articles. Steele held a number of roles at the University of Chicago including professor in the department of surgery, vice president for medical affairs, dean of the division of biological sciences and the Pritzker School of Medicine.
Dr. Steele is a member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academy of Science. For the IOM, he sits on the Roundtable on Value and Science-Driven Health Care and the Committee on Governance and Financing of Graduation Medical Education. Additionally, he serves on the United States Congressional Budget Office’s panel of health advisers. Steele previously served on the Commonwealth Fund’s Commission on a High Performance Health System and the National Committee for Quality Assurance’s Committee on Performance Improvement.
