Answering AHA Research Questions - 2013 to 2015

The AHA Committee on Research (COR) is tasked with developing a triennial AHA Research Agenda. In 2012, the COR identified the top three research questions for the 2013-2015 AHA research agenda with input from the committee members and the AHA executive management. HRET, AHA and partnering organizations will work to address these questions over the next three years. The 2013 to 2015 top research questions provide a focus for the AHA and the hospital and health system field to address important questions that can contribute to improving care nationally.

The top three research questions are:

1. What are the most effective and efficient ways for hospitals to integrate care and improve performance (financial, clinical, service, patient and staff experience) across the continuum of care?

2. What are best practices for hospitals and health system to adopt to sustain financial performance during the shift from volume-based to value-based business models? Additionally, how can payment redesign be structured to encourage efficient use of health services?

3. What are effective implementation strategies to reduce unwarranted variation in utilization of services to optimize quality and efficiency in the health care system?
