Your “Hit Parade”

Rich Umbdenstock, AHA President and CEO

Today, Congress passed legislation that will temporarily prevent Medicare physician payment cuts and extend some important expiring hospital provisions. But hospitals, and especially your ability to serve your most vulnerable patients, will suffer payment reductions to offset the cost of the physician payment fix.  At the same time, thanks to your enthusiastic grassroots efforts, some even larger cuts were averted – for now.  But never forget that once a cut is proposed, it joins a sort of “hit parade” that is replayed each and every time fiscal matters are under discussion, from those contained in the President’s recent budget proposal to the next revival of the physician payment issue that Congress will have to attend to after the fall elections.  As Campaign 2012 ramps up, it will be imperative for hospitals to educate both the public and candidates on how we can sustain Medicare and Medicaid for the future with real solutions that improve the health care system vs. arbitrary and mindless ratcheting of provider payments.  Together we have lots of work to do – stay tuned
