The Power of Practice
Rich Umbdenstock, AHA President and CEO
Each time a tornado strikes, it powerfully reaffirms the value of emergency preparedness - and there have been a frightening number of tornadoes recently. Experience drawn from all that planning and all those drills becomes a precious asset when hospitals must respond to chaos in an instant. We have watched in awe and admiration as our colleagues across the South and Midwest snapped to attention, drew upon the experience drilled into them and went about the business of saving lives in recent days. They moved patients out of harm's way, sheltered those with no place to go, helped the sick and injured, welcomed overflow patients from other hospitals and more. Their response exemplifies their leadership as pillars of emergency preparedness in their communities. Our thoughts are with the hospital employees and their families who have been directly affected by the tornadoes.
