Shoulder to Shoulder for Patients

Rich Umbdenstock, AHA President and CEO

A spirit of unity prevailed as hospital leaders, true “Champions for Care,” turned out in force this week in Washington, D.C., for the 2012 AHA Annual Membership Meeting. That spirit carried over into visits to Capitol Hill with delegations, led by their state hospital associations, stressing the importance of congressional action on immediate issues - mitigating drug shortages, passing key Medicare extenders and funding children's hospitals graduate medical education. Challenges also loom ahead whenever the nation decides to address the issue of deficit reduction. We all must continuously educate legislators on the difficulty of ensuring that Medicare and Medicaid patients will have timely access to essential services in an environment of mounting cuts and challenges to hospitals. If you couldn't make it to Washington, please join your colleagues in delivering these critical messages to your federal legislators. They will listen during this election year.
