What to Unlearn?

Rich Umbdenstock, AHA President and CEO

In today's uncertainty, the most pressing question is “How to plan?” This has been a theme of state hospital association summer meetings I've attended. The Maine association's theme was “The Future Requires Unlearning.” This week at the Oregon association, Paul Keckley from Deloitte noted that people today want something between them and their doctor - data and options. There's wisdom and vision in both framings. As we work to transform health care, we must unlearn things that no longer apply and help our various partners to do the same. We have to do so many things differently - think, plan, operate and, maybe most importantly, measure success. It's how we'll get to the change of culture in health care for which we all strive. What would you like to unlearn today? Me? I'm headed to the AHA Health Forum Leadership Summit and to join 1,500 hospital leaders in unlearning some more.

Thanks,
Rich
