Leadership Legacy

Rich Umbdenstock, AHA President and CEO

Recent weeks brought news of the passing of two leaders in our field. From different faith traditions, Bishop Joseph Sullivan of Brooklyn and Dr. Spencer (Spike) Foreman, former CEO of Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, led in complementary ways — they believed in the need to serve the underserved with great emphasis on the integration of community health and medical care. One led Catholic Charities and advocated for close working relationships with Catholic hospitals, and the other led an academic medical center with a network of community services and a care management organization. Each was recognized for bold vision, unwavering dedication and a great sense of humor. As we mourn their passing, I think what they’d relish is that we build on their legacy – that we reach upstream and downstream to integrate care across our communities. Integration, service and respect – with abundant love and a great sense of humor – thanks so much to our friends, Spike and Bishop Joe, for that legacy.
