Tell the Real Story on RACs

Rich Umbdenstock, AHA President and CEO

This week, the AHA released a new video to aid in our fight to rein in recovery audit contractors (RACs). Recent media coverage about RACs overlooks a few simple truths—that hospitals are drowning in redundant audits, unmanageable medical record requests and inappropriate payment denials, that RACs waste hospital resources and contribute to growing health care costs, and that recovery auditors receive contingency fee payments, a potential conflict of interest. AHA data show that hospitals are successfully overturning RAC denials 72 percent of the time, underscoring the current RAC system’s latent flaws. Thank you for continuing to urge your federal representatives to sign on to the Medicare Audit Improvement Act (S. 1012/H.R. 1250), and please share with them our new video and last week’s infographic detailing how RACs drain resources hospitals need to care for communities. Let’s take this bill over the finish line.
