Open and Shut

Rich Umbdenstock, AHA President and CEO

Many doors closed in Washington this week, as many more opened across the country. The Health Insurance Marketplaces went live on Tuesday. There are glitches, but the ranks of those who will be covered by health insurance come January are increasing by the hour. But as I write this, Congress and the White House seem no closer to an agreement that would fully re-open government. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has said that contractors will continue to process and pay Medicare claims, and states have received advanced appropriations for Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program. But with the debt limit looming and the physician payment fix due to expire at the end of the year, these are treacherous times. The AHA will let you know what we learn as it happens – and what you can do to protect your continued ability to deliver care to your community.

Thanks,
Rich
