It’s Not Over

Rich Umbdenstock, AHA President and CEO

Congress handed hospitals a mixed bag in its budget deal. We are particularly disappointed that the sequester for mandatory spending, including Medicare, will be extended into 2022 and 2023. At the same time, we’re pleased at the two-year delay of Medicaid cuts to disproportionate share hospitals, which treat some of the most vulnerable patients, and the three-month extension of several key Medicare programs important to rural hospitals. But it’s not over. With a three-month physician payment fix and a budget deal for 2014 having passed the House, awaiting Senate action, March will likely bring another round of fiscal flash points. While your federal legislators are home for the holidays, I hope you’ll create opportunities to let them know about the long list of changes your hospital faces in 2014 – and your need for their opposition to further cuts in order to maintain funding for the hospital services your community relies on.
