No More Medicare Piggy Bank

Rich Umbdenstock, AHA President and CEO

Last week, I wrote about a misguided Senate proposal to pay for extension of unemployment benefits by lengthening even further the sequester provision that cuts two percent from Medicare payments for hospital services. Using health care dollars to pay for other programs would set a dangerous precedent, and we hoped the idea was dead when the proposal was defeated. But it’s back, and if hospitals don’t act now to let their federal legislators know that it’s completely unacceptable, they will think this is OK with you. Hospitals have endured cut after cut in federal funding. Hospital patients can’t afford a Congress that treats Medicare funding like a piggy bank for other programs. Your federal legislators will be at home during the next week – please get in touch with them and register your outrage at any proposal to use Medicare funding to fund other programs.

Thanks,
Rich
