Patient Safety Awareness

Rich Umbdenstock, AHA President and CEO

March 2-8 is Patient Safety Awareness Week, and hospitals have a lot to celebrate this year.  More than 1,500 of you participating in the Hospital Engagement Network of AHA and its Health Research & Educational Trust have, in two short years, provided better care for about 69,000 patients – while saving more than $200 million in precious health care dollars.  And that’s by no means the whole story.  Hospitals across the country are showing a fierce determination to build a culture of safety up and down the care continuum.  You are conquering once-pervasive infections, eliminating procedures that don’t produce the best possible outcomes, and engaging patients, families and entire communities in improving health and health care. Patient Safety Awareness week, sponsored by the National Patient Safety Foundation, is the perfect time for hospitals to tell this often overlooked story, and the AHA has plenty of ideas to get you started.

Thanks,
Rich
