May is Mental Health Month

Rich Umbdenstock, AHA President and CEO

Achieving the Triple Aim – better care, better health and lower costs – means addressing all of a patient’s needs. We know that patients whose behavioral or substance abuse challenges are ignored when their physical health conditions are treated don’t do as well and ultimately use more care. With an integrated, patient-centered system of care, hospitals, physician practices and payers can incorporate services that address all of the patient’s needs. May is Mental Health Month, and Mental Health America has produced a toolkit that will help you celebrate. It’s also an excellent opportunity for hospitals to consider Integrating Behavioral Care Across the Continuum – which is the topic of an excellent new guide from AHA’s Hospitals in Pursuit of Excellence initiative. Each health care organization must develop its own plan for integrating behavioral health, driven by community needs and available resources. Mental Health Month is a great time to get started.

Thanks,
Rich
