Hospitals Are Leading the Way

Rich Umbdenstock, AHA President and CEO

Hospitals are leading the quest for quality in health care, outpacing improvements in other settings. That’s the affirming conclusion drawn from two national reports just issued by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, part of the Department of Health and Human Services. Hospitals showed significant improvement in three quarters of quality measures; home health and nursing home care improved in 60 percent of measures and ambulatory care settings in about half. In the press release announcing the findings, AHRQ Director Richard Kronick said, "The intense national focus on quality improvement in hospitals is starting to pay off, but much work remains to make sure that all Americans have access to high-quality care in every setting." That intense focus has been embraced by hospitals as just one part of the hard work they are undertaking to transform in order to meet the changing needs of their community and this nation. Great work!
