Some Help, But Not Enough

Rich Umbdenstock, AHA President and CEO

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ final rule establishing how hospitals can qualify to receive incentive payments for meaningful use of electronic health records in fiscal year 2014, issued late the Friday before Labor Day, offers some welcome, but very limited flexibility. The late release, and the failure to address 2015 timing challenges, mean that there is more work to do to make the meaningful use program work. We met this week with Health and Human Services National Coordinator for Health Information Technology Karen DeSalvo, M.D., to discuss meaningful use, interoperability issues and other concerns important to hospitals. We are pleased that Dr. DeSalvo will join me Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 4:00 p.m. ET for the next members-only Town Hall Webcast to talk about these matters and answer your questions. Be sure to tune in.

Thanks,
Rich
