While caring for patients will always be paramount, other skills related to cross-functional collaboration, conflict resolution, managing to metrics and long-term strategy become equally important. Norwegian American Hospital, a 200-bed safety-net hospital in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood, recognized this need within its organization and embarked on a professional development partnership with the American Hospital Association that will help it engage and develop physicians to build a pipeline of future leaders.

Using Telehealth to Improve Access to Specialty Care - Martinsburg Veterans Affairs Medical Center

The organization's initial foray into virtual health care was the creation of a home telehealth service. "Health buddies" visit veterans in their homes to administer and record simple diagnostic information and communicate it back to providers. In 2011, Martinsburg's program grew with the introduction of video telehealth used for retinal imaging. Soon after implementing the retinal program, Martinsburg entered the realm of face-to-screen, real-time telehealth by adding tele-podiatry and tele-mental health services.
