Traumatic experiences makes children more vulnerable to both medical illness and behavioral health problems, and often create hidden obstacles to providing effective treatment. Please join the AHA’s Section for Psychiatric and Substance Abuse Services and the National Council for Behavioral Health for a joint virtual workshop on Creating Cultures of Trauma Informed Care: CMHCs, Hospitals & Health Systems Advancing Whole Health.

This 60-minute webinar will feature Elizabeth Guroff, director of trauma informed services at the National Council for Behavioral Health; Wanda Vargas, senior psychologist at New York Presbyterian Hospital’s Family PEACE Trauma Treatment Center; and Melissa Montgomery, clinical program manager at Mayerson Center for Safe and Healthy Children at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

Participants will hear two hospitals journeys in transforming their settings through the lens of trauma informed care. They will share what motivated them to explore this path, opportunities and challenges they’ve encountered, and goals for their journey. You will learn:

  • What trauma informed care is
  • Why and how it’s become an integral part of care provided throughout various departments at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital
  • Why and how Family PEACE Trauma Treatment Center at New York Presbyterian Hospital provides mental health services to address the psychological impact of trauma exposure on children from birth to five years old and their primary caregivers
  • Barriers to implementing trauma informed care
  • How trauma informed care can improve outcomes for patients
