Nurse Leadership

As leaders of the most trusted profession and largest component of the health care workforce, it is critical nurse leaders educate legislators and regulatory agencies about the impact of health policy on patient care, the nursing workforce and community.

The AHA's American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) promotes the value of nursing leadership and its invaluable contribution to the promotion of health and pursuit of quality patient care.

Key issues for nurse leaders:

  • Funding for nursing workforce developments to ensure there is an adequate supply of nurses to care for patients, articulately in rural and underserved areas.
  • Increasing nursing research to improve patient outcomes, quality, safety and the delivery of cost-effective care.
  • Promoting the value of nursing in improved patient outcomes, care coordination, quality, safety and delivery of cost-effective care through data-driven research.
  • Provider nondiscrimination provisions with the Medicare and Medicaid programs, ensuring nurses are able to practice to the full scope of their licensure and professional competence.
