U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, M.D., June 25 released an advisory on firearm violence, declaring it a public health crisis in America. The advisory noted the disproportionate impact of firearm violence on children and communities of color and called for an evidence-based approach comprising of greater investments in research, implementing prevention strategies, and increased access to mental health services and support. The AHA and community leaders on June 6 participated in a White House convening about gun violence and highlighted hospitals’ role on the front lines in treating victims of gun violence, implementing hospital-based violence intervention programs and operating gun safety initiatives.
