HHS Awards Grants to Help States, Territories Combat Opioid Crisis

The Department of Health and Human Services yesterday awarded $485 million in grants to help states and territories combat the opioid crisis, the last of two funding rounds provided for in the 21st Century Cures Act. “These funds will help support evidence-based efforts at the state level to prevent misuse of opioids in the first place, expand access to effective treatment options for people in need, and support recovery for those who have prevailed,” said HHS Secretary Alex Azar. In the next few months, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration will release details on a separate $1 billion grant funding opportunity to be awarded in September to states, territories and tribes hardest hit by the crisis, HHS said.
