In his investiture address as AHA chairman, Jonathan Perlin, M.D., yesterday called for a “rededication to the Triple Aim” of improving the patient experience of care (including quality and satisfaction), improving the health of populations and reducing the per capita cost of health care.

“We can’t have a sustainable health system without constantly improving health care and health,” said Perlin, who is HCA’s chief medical officer and president of its clinical services group. He told AHA members that they can’t improve health without engaging the community or ensuring access to care. “And we can’t let our momentum in increasing access through the health insurance marketplace and Medicaid expansion dissipate,” he said.

Perlin added that it is not enough for hospital leaders to raise their concerns with legislators and policymakers about what isn’t working in health care. “We are obligated to bring forward solutions that we know will work,” he said.
