Robust data on patients’ social needs enables hospitals to provide better care and improve health equity. ICD-10-CM Z codes capture data on patients’ social needs which may influence an individual’s health status. Though currently underused, Z codes have the power to improve patient care, guide community health improvement efforts and support conversations about the movement toward value-based payment.
