The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Florida Department of Health are investigating at least 24 cases of meningococcal disease, including seven deaths, among gay and bisexual men. CDC recommends that men who have sex with men get a meningococcal vaccine if they live in Florida, or talk with their health care provider about getting the vaccine if they plan to travel there. The agency also recommends routine vaccination against the virus for people with HIV. According to CDC, meningococcal disease can first appear as a flu-like illness and rapidly worsen, so people with symptoms should seek medical care right away.
