Northwell Health’s Gun Violence Prevention Learning Collaborative for Hospitals and Health Systems July 27 hosted a session on the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, AHA-supported legislation signed into law last month that reinforces the association’s approach to gun violence as a public health issue, particularly by investing in mental and behavioral health services. Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., who appeared at the session and helped negotiate the bill, said health care providers are “an essential piece of this movement” to address all forms of violence. Other speakers included Shannon Frattaroli, a core faculty member at the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions; and Rob Wilcox, federal legal director for Everytown, a movement to end gun violence.
