Oklahoma Children’s Hospital at OU Health has performed the state’s first targeted chemotherapy for a rare pediatric eye cancer, marking an advancement in care for children diagnosed with retinoblastoma. The procedure, known as intra-arterial chemotherapy, delivers cancer-fighting medication directly to the blood vessel that feeds the tumor in the eye, sparing the rest of the body from the harsh side effects of traditional chemotherapy. Led by pediatric and endovascular neurosurgeon Michael Feldman, M.D., the multidisciplinary team successfully treated a 10-month-old patient — an achievement that previously required families to travel out of state for similar care.
By using a highly targeted approach, the team can protect both vision and quality of life. “This procedure represents a transformative step for children with retinoblastoma,” Feldman said. “It allows us to deliver powerful anti-cancer medication precisely where it’s needed.”
