Nevada hospital advances aortic care with minimally invasive technique

Las Vegas-based Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center recently completed Nevada’s first FDA‑approved minimally invasive repair for complex aortic aneurysms, a life-threatening condition involving the body’s main artery. This approach marks a major step forward in improving the state’s vascular care.
Traditional standard treatment for aneurysms that form in complex or hard-to-reach places involves extensive open surgery, requiring a long incision from the patient’s rib cage to their pelvis and months of recovery. This technology allows surgeons to treat these types of aneurysms through tiny groin incisions and by navigating wires and catheters through blood vessels, rather than opening up the chest or abdomen. The procedure usually takes under three hours and most patients leave the hospital within two days.
“This is a transformative moment for vascular care in our community,” said Jason Desai, Southern Hills Hospital’s chief operating officer. “Our goal is to revolutionize vascular surgical care in the Las Vegas Valley by delivering advanced techniques and outcomes that meet and exceed national standards.”
