Renovated postpartum unit, NICU expand access to care for Iowa moms, babies

University of Iowa Health Care is expanding its support for growing families with a series of major upgrades to maternal and newborn services, including a newly enhanced postpartum unit and a state-of-the-art neonatal intensive care unit. The health system recently completed a 30,000-square-foot renovation of its postpartum and obstetrics inpatient space at the John Pappajohn Pavilion, increasing capacity to more than 60 maternal care beds. The upgraded unit will better serve Iowa’s growing demand for maternity care, offering dedicated exam rooms, improved work areas for staff and expanded space for new parents and their babies.

Hospital leaders say the expansion is part of a broader effort to strengthen maternal health care statewide, particularly as more families seek specialized or high-risk pregnancy services. UI Health Care’s university campus is designated as the state’s only Level 4 maternal care center, meaning it offers the highest level of care for complex pregnancies and deliveries. Officials note that with more than 3,000 babies born at the facility each year — and that number continuing to rise — the additional space will help address capacity challenges while improving patient experience and outcomes.

The investment also extends to the youngest and most vulnerable patients. At Stead Family Children’s Hospital, a newly opened NICU expansion adds 32 beds and advanced care capabilities for premature and critically ill newborns.
