Attack of the munchies at 3 a.m.? Not a problem at WellSpan Health York Hospital, which has introduced Fresh Take Eatery, an AI‑powered robotic kitchen that provides 24/7 access to hot, healthy meals for patients, visitors, and staff, ensuring fresh, on-demand food options at any hour. Leaders say the launch reflects the organization’s human‑centered approach to operational challenges.

Designed to address growing food‑service needs, Fresh Take Eatery effectively doubles dining capacity during peak times while occupying only 400 square feet — far less than traditional kitchen expansions. The robotic system automates ingredient storage, retrieval, cooking, plating, serving, and cleaning. With the ability to manage up to 80 fresh ingredients, it can produce hundreds of customizable meals such as bowls, salads, and pasta dishes, using the same locally sourced items featured in the hospital cafeteria. Dietitians also contributed to menu development to ensure nutritious options.

Fresh Take Eatery represents the first deployment of robotic kitchen service in a U.S. health care setting — offering scalable, continuous food service that could become a model for hospitals, colleges, and other large institutions.
