Children with medical complexity (CMC) are a small but highly vulnerable subset of children with special healthcare needs. They often experience multiple chronic conditions, functional limitations, neurologic impairment and technology dependence. Although CMC represent less than 1% of the U.S. pediatric population, they represent a large share of pediatric healthcare utilization and spending, accounting for approximately one-third of pediatric hospital costs.
Providing high-quality, coordinated care for these patients requires significant resources and collaboration across care settings. The complexity of care requires unique and innovative solutions to support both healthcare systems and families.
The Care Delivery for Children with Medical Complexity Roundtable brings together hospital leaders from organizations that care for children with medical complexity. The roundtable includes three virtual convenings a year and serves as a forum for peer learning, collaboration and knowledge sharing. Participants have the opportunity to exchange best practices, discuss emerging challenges and help inform the AHA’s efforts to advance care delivery and improve outcomes for children and families.
