Description

From Policy to Practice: Implementing Effective Threat Assessment Programs
Operationalizing Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) Through Cross-Functional Action

Wednesday, August 19, 2026
1 - 2 p.m. Eastern; noon - 1 p.m. Central; 10 - 11 a.m. Pacific

Workplace violence remains a persistent and complex challenge for healthcare organizations, with multilayered approaches across teams. Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM) programs are gaining traction as a proactive approach, but many systems still face a critical gap: translating identified risks into timely, effective action.

This session will explore how healthcare leaders can operationalize BTAM frameworks to move from policy to practice, building on established industry guidance such as the American Hospital Association’s resources on implementing Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management (BTAM), to which speaker Lynn Van Male contributed. Attendees will gain insight into building cross-functional alignment across clinical, HR and security teams; establishing clear workflows; and defining intervention points across the continuum — from early behavioral warning signs to front-line response.

By connecting governance, people, process and technology, this discussion will highlight how organizations can create a more coordinated, systemwide approach to assessment and management — strengthening their ability to detect risk early, intervene effectively, and better protect patients, staff and visitors.

Attendees Will Learn to:

  • Identify common gaps between threat assessment and action, and where programs often break down in practice.
  • Explore strategies for aligning teams to enable a coordinated and cross-functional approach.
  • Define key intervention points across the continuum of risk, from early behavioral indicators to front-line action.
  • Apply a systems-based approach to threat assessment as part of the overall workplace violence prevention efforts by connecting governance, workflows and operational capabilities.
