CDC reports over 1,400 monkeypox cases, growing vaccine supply
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention today reported over 1,400 U.S. monkeypox cases and no deaths since the outbreak began in May. Federal officials said they expect cases to grow this month and into August as more people are exposed and testing volume increases. CDC’s laboratory Response Network has seen a 76% increase in testing since July 6. Four commercial laboratories also recently began testing specimens for health care providers, expanding total testing capacity to 70,000 samples per week, which officials said is sufficient to meet demand. CDC currently recommends vaccination for those with known or suspected monkeypox exposure in the past two weeks, noting that demand for the monkeypox vaccine continues to exceed supply. The agency today announced an order for 2.5 million doses of JYNNEOS vaccine, which officials said would make nearly 7 million doses available by mid-2023. In addition, the Strategic National Stockpile holds over 100 million doses of an older smallpox vaccine (ACAM2000), which states can request.
