Medical School Seniors, Graduates Matched to Residency Slots

A record 31,899 medical school seniors and graduates were matched to U.S. residency positions today through the National Resident Matching Program, 1,421 more than last year. A record 33,167 positions were offered. Applicants include students and graduates of U.S. and international medical schools. The match results are watched because they can be predictors of future physician workforce supply and competitiveness of specialties. Specialties with more than 30 positions that filled fewer than 45% with U.S. allopathic medical school seniors this year were family medicine, internal medicine, surgery-preliminary, pediatrics-primary, and pathology.
