House panel holds hearing on public health impact of gun violence

The House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee today held a field hearing in Chicago on the public health impact of gun violence, the role of research and prevention approaches. In addition to other community representatives, witnesses at the hearing included Selwyn Rogers Jr., M.D., chief of trauma and acute care surgery at The University of Chicago Medicine; Niva Lubin-Johnson, M.D., immediate past president of the National Medical Association; and Ronald Stewart, M.D., medical director for the American College of Surgeons’ Committee on Trauma. The AHA’s Hospitals Against Violence initiative offers examples of successful programs and practices, with an emphasis on youth violence prevention, workplace violence prevention and combating human trafficking.
