President Biden today announced the federal government will purchase an additional 200 million doses of the two COVID-19 vaccines authorized by the Food and Drug Administration for emergency use.

Biden said that even without other vaccines gaining emergency use authorization approval from the FDA, the purchase, which will be delivered this summer, would give the U.S. the ability to fully vaccinate 300 million American adults by summer’s end. The federal government will purchase 100 million doses each of Moderna’s and Pfizer’s vaccines, for a total of 200 million doses.

Biden also said the federal government will, beginning next week, increase the number of released doses to 10 million per week, up from 8.6 million doses.
