Peter Slavin, M.D., will be the next president and CEO of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and president and CEO of Cedars-Sinai Health System, effective Oct. 1, the health system announced July 2. Slavin, considered one of the nation’s premier leaders in academic medicine, served as president of Massachusetts General Hospital from 2003 to 2021. During his tenure he successfully led major growth in the hospital’s clinical care mission, research funding, scientific impact and workforce development.

“Peter has a passion for and a strong track record of expanding access to care and advancing health and wellness for the patients and communities he serves,” said AHA President and CEO Rick Pollack. “Under his leadership, Mass General was nationally recognized for its innovative work to improve community health and advance health equity, including being named the AHA’s inaugural Equity of Care Award winner in 2014. We look forward to continuing to work with Peter in his new role as we work to advance health for individuals and communities.”

Slavin succeeds Tom Priselac, who is retiring after 30 years of leadership as Cedars-Sinai’s president and CEO and 45 total years of service to the organization.

“Tom’s tenure, accessibility and authenticity put him in a special class of transformational leaders in our sector,” Pollack said. “He has devoted nearly a half a century to the patients and people of Cedars-Sinai and the communities they serve. His dedication to making the hospital world class in clinical care, research, teaching and community programs is an inspiration for us all and work that will carry Cedars-Sinai into its next successful chapter. The AHA was fortunate to have Tom serve as chair during one of the most significant moments in our nation’s health care history. We thank him for his service and wish him the very best in his well-earned retirement.”
