Minnesota hospitals report on community benefits

Minnesota hospitals and health systems contributed more than $4.3 billion in programs and services to benefit the health of their communities in 2014, a 4.6% increase from 2013, according to a recent report by the Minnesota Hospital Association. The total includes $2.3 billion in government underpayments for treating Medicare and Medicaid patients, 10.9% more than in 2013; and $589 million in uncompensated care, a 2.9% increase; among other community benefits. “Minnesota’s hospitals and health systems work beyond the physical walls of the hospital to strengthen the health of Minnesotans and our communities,” said MHA President and CEO Lawrence Massa. “We know that much of what influences our health happens outside of the doctor’s office – in our schools, workplaces and neighborhoods.”
