Telling the Hospital Story: Central Texas children’s hospital opens intraoperative MRI surgical suite

Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin has unveiled a new intraoperative MRI surgical suite, designed specifically for pediatric neurosurgery. The environment equips surgeons with the ability to perform complex procedures such as epilepsy ablations and tumor resections without having to move the patient out of the operating room. By integrating real-time MRI imaging into the surgical workflow, the suite offers more precision, reduces operative times and diminishes risks associated with patient transfer. The initiative was funded through Dell Children’s HERE Campaign, a philanthropic effort ensuring world-class care remains accessible to children across central Texas.

“It opens up the door for Dell Children's to improve health care and to teach the world,” said Elias Rizk, M.D., underscoring the suite’s capacity to transform pediatric neurosurgery and amplify the hospital’s research and teaching missions. Dell Children’s Pediatric Neurology & Neurosurgery program — a clinical partnership with UT Health Austin — is one of the few pediatric hospitals nationwide to offer integrated intraoperative MRI.
