AAMC President and CEO David J. Skorton to retire in 2027

The Association of American Medical Colleges announced Sept. 15 that David J. Skorton, M.D., president and CEO, will retire from his role June 30, 2027. Skorton has led AAMC since July 2019. Early during his tenure, Skorton guided AAMC through the COVID-19 pandemic, helping bring attention to shortages of personal protective equipment in hospitals and testing shortages in academic laboratories. Prior to joining AAMC, Skorton was secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and president of both Cornell University and the University of Iowa. 

“David Skorton’s leadership at the AAMC has been marked by a deep commitment to advancing academic medicine, strengthening the physician workforce, training the next generation of caregivers and improving the health of patients and communities across the country,” said AHA President and CEO Rick Pollack. “We at the AHA have valued his partnership and friendship, and I wish David all the best as he begins this well-earned next chapter.”
