Big Sandy Medical Center celebrates 60 years
Big Sandy Medical Center has remained independently owned for 60 years, defying the trend of small rural hospitals being absorbed by larger health care systems.
Originally established in 1965 as a nine-bed facility, it has grown into a 25-bed critical access and emergency care center. The hospital takes pride in its community roots, with a sign reading “Community Built” symbolizing the volunteer-driven effort that brought it to life.
Jessica Ophus, the director of staff and marketing at the Big Sandy Medical Center, who also works as an RN, told KRTV in Great Falls, "We were built by the community, for the community, and we want to stay that way.”
The hospital’s commitment to local engagement is evident in its employment of 60 staff members from nearby areas, its partnership with the local high school, and its expansion projects — such as a wellness center and physical therapy clinic — funded entirely by the community.
Looking ahead, the center plans to introduce CT scanning services, continuing its mission to provide high-quality care.
