New York City is making a significant investment in maternal health with the construction of a new integrated women’s health center at NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health in Coney Island. Launched with an $18.5 million allocation from Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, the initiative aims to address critical health care disparities, particularly for Black women who face significantly higher maternal mortality rates.

"The problem we've had with Black maternal health is that we've been working at the margins. We give a little bit here, we do a little bit there, and we don't affect meaningful change. Black women are still dying at a higher rate. What we need to do is shock the system," Reynoso said.

The new center will feature advanced technology and facilities, including labor and delivery rooms, a neonatal intensive care unit, and a nursery. It will also expand to include 30 exam rooms, procedural rooms, ultrasound facilities, and dedicated spaces for education and community engagement. The project is expected to be completed by Spring 2026 and is part of a broader effort to provide comprehensive, one-stop maternal care and improve overall women’s health in the community.
